Since the commercial introduction of Li-ion batteries by Sony in 1991, battery manufacturers have made steady incremental improvements to the technology. However the energy density of Li-ion cells have plateaued at roughly 600 Wh/l and 220 Wh/kg with little hope for improvement and the products have become commoditized. Attempts to push Li-ion beyond its energy density limits have resulted in serious disasters such as battery fires.
The demand for smaller lighter batteries can only be met by a new approach and disruptive change in technology.

PolyPlus Li metal has 4 times the volumetric capacity density (mAh/cc) and 10 times the gravimetric capacity density (mAh/g) relative to the carbon electrode in Li-ion cells.
PolyPlus invented the first conductive glass separator for rechargeable Li metal batteries. Our scientists recognized that thin continuous monolithic glass sheets have sufficient flexibility and conductance for the application. Continuous monolithic glass sheet acts as a barrier to dendrites and facilitates efficient Li cycling.

Transition from bulky and heavy carbon anodes to thin, lightweight lithium metal electrodes having a solid-state monolithic glass separator will greatly enhance the energy density of rechargeable cells while simultaneously improving cell safety. PolyPlus scientists developed a proprietary process to bond Li metal to continuous monolithic glass electrolyte. Laboratory cells validate predictions – continuous monolithic glass prevents dendrites and promotes efficient cycling of lithium metal.

Glass protected lithium batteries enable lithium metal anodes to be combined with conventional lithium ion cathodes to double the energy density of lithium ion batteries or provide the same energy in a package that is half the size.
Battery developers have long theorized that solid-state electrolytes might allow replacement of the bulky carbon electrode in Li-ion cells with Li metal. PolyPlus went a step further in developing a technology that is inherently scalable. The discovery by PolyPlus that thin ionically conductive glass sheet can be bonded to lithium metal to form a solid-state anode laminate provides a pathway to step-change battery technology that is both scalable and manufacturable.
The PolyPlus Glass Protected Li Metal Battery technology is based on abundant low cost raw materials and high volume manufacturing. As the technology is scaled we expect costs for the solid-state Li metal anode to be competitive with Li-ion technology while offering a step-change in performance improvement.
